Mexico City
February 22, 2006

The United States will fund a workshop on rural electrification through renewable energy, to be held in Acapulco from February 22 to 24. Mexican federal and state government officials and technicians and World Bank representatives will attend. The workshop will focus on training and enhancing renewable energy expertise in the states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, Veracruz, and Guerrero. Techniques taught at the workshop will enhance design, developmental, and operational skills of the technicians who maintain renewable energy technologies in rural communities.

Added Ambassador Garza, “Access to electricity improves the quality of life in rural communities, creating new opportunities and income sources.”

The United States, through its Agency for International Development and the Department of Energy, is providing technical assistance to Mexico to improve energy conservation, clean production, and renewable energy technologies in targeted industries and municipalities.
