Condolences to the Families of the Students Who Were Tragically Killed at Virginia Tech Yesterday

Mexico City
April 17, 2007

“Today, the people of the United States are deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic and senseless loss of some of our brightest youth. For reasons still unknown, a lone gunman at Virginia Tech University yesterday took the lives of at least 32 fellow students before killing himself.

“Yesterday President Bush received a letter from Mexican President Felipe Calderon expressing his profound condolences for this tragic occurrence. We greatly appreciate this expression of sympathy from President Calderon at a time of national mourning.

“On behalf of the U.S. Mission in Mexico, I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the young victims of this horrible act. For the remainder of the week, the U.S. Embassy will fly the flag of the United States at half-mast in honor of the students who lost their lives yesterday.”
